There will be combative patients in any unit, but this is a particular problem in the psych unit [especially in acute]
At the hospital, the alert for a combative patient [without weapon] would be code grey. I’ve only been present for one code grey when a patient threw a chair through the window. My group mates and I didn’t see the actually see the chair being thrown, but heard the patient yelling and loud clattering that sounded like dishes falling. He was alone and had a history out-of-the-blue aggression in past hospitalizations.
So how exactly does the psych unit go about handling a combative patient that has escalated? The stereotype is that patients are immediately thrown into straight jackets. However, I have honestly never seen that happen before.
Hm, tell me if you guys don’t want me to reblog some stuff from my nursing blog. I’m reblogging the psych stuff b/c I feel like it’s something more people would be interested than something liked medsurg. On another note if there’s any questions about psych nursing / being at the psych unit/ mental illness in general feel free to shoot me an ask!
So my dad made the interesting comment that one of his worries regarding my psych clinicals is that I will ‘catch’ the mental illnesses and adopt the mentalities/behaviors of the patients at the units.
Firstly some people are born with the predisposition for mental illnesses, and then a traumatic event or a culmination of psychosocial factors leads to an accumulation of stress that the patient can’t cope with - thus triggering the onset of the mental illness.

This is specifically about nursing! I’m currently posting a bunch of stuff about my experiences at the psych unit, but if you have any questions about the nursing school process, what being a nursing student is like, or just asking wtf nurses do feel free to drop an ask or follow or whatnot!
I wanted to start off with psych nursing mainly because I know a lot of people don’t get the opportunity to observe a psych unit in the first place.
I don’t care if everyone is drawing avengers…I’m going to make avengers buttons too -cries-
If I have extras I will sell online! I’m still trying to figure out the pricing but I’d like to keep it less than $3 per button.
Hm I was wondering if any of you guys going to AX want to preorder buttons want to tell me?
Here are designs I have so far, I didn’t post all of them in button format but you get the general idea right? ;_;
